It's an opening night performance and your pulse quickens in anticipation. You've come here to be moved, to be touched, to drink from the same wellsprings of emotion that the composer drew upon when he sets his feelings to music more than a century ago.

Back stage, alone, a singer raises her fingers to her lips in meditation. Her nerves are tingling. She is afraid. It's the same before every performance: this conflicting sense of fear and exhilaration. Why does she do it ? A need to communicate, to share, to be true to the inspiration of a human genius who is long since gone to his grave. She is ready now, focused. She steps onto the stage.

In the back of the hall, a sound engineer does a mental review of the various microphone placements, each one carefully chosen to capture the magic of a live performance. Like the singer and members of the orchestra down in the pit, he is a perfectionist. He adjust his headset as the first note reaches out through the wires. He closes his eyes and smiles and wonders how many others will share in this miracle.
